The path extends to about 10 km and is ideal for days out with the family or the classroom, by foot or on bicycle. The route leads westward from Neunstetten via Stegbruck, past the Herrieden stork gate and Leutenbuch.

The European beaver, commonly also known as “Master Bockert”, is the largest indigenous rodent. Look out for tracks along rivers and ditches, they can be found everywhere. Location: South of Neunstetten.

Hedges can be found on open land, along trails and road, at the borders of villages and in settlement areas. In the German language, Hecke = Hedge is derived from the word “Hag”; literally, this means “Fencing with shrubs”. Like barely another habitat, hedges offer a number of different life conditions on smallest space. Location: North-west of Stegbruck
At the upper reaches of the Altmühl river, on can still clearly see that the path of the rivers usedto lead through expansive wetlands. Early on, the importance of the ditch network present there had been recognized. Together with the environmental agencies, the farmers take care to maintain the habitats and retreat areas for many rare animals and plants.

About 70% of the young animals die before they get to the age of 1. 20 to 25% dof adult birds die each year in electric line accidents or as a result of being hunted. Stork numbers are also threatened through increasing cultivation of the land. Hence, the stork is a protected animal. Location: Stork gate in Herrieden
Meadow birds are migrant birds that always return to their original breeding grounds. The breeding time and period for raising the young is between March and end of June. The state of Bavaria has initiated an expansive program that is to protect the habitats, especially also for meadow birds. Location: Leutenbuch
