In the 10th century, repeated attacks by the Hungarians forced the people of Herrieden to erect a fortress, which was for the first time mentioned in documents in 1122 and, over the course of the centuries, was destroyed many times.
Massive fortifications were also built – the basis for awarding the right of being a city in that time (1230).
Behind the roofed defence corridor with many embrasures, the residents of the town felt comparatively safe back then.
Still, Herrieden was descended on by four catastrophes: Two large city fires in 1305 and 1490, as well as two destructions in1316 and 1633. With plenty of industriousness, love and persistence, the people of Herrieden kept rebuilding their town for only this was it possible to safeguard important cultural monuments for the after-world.
